Calories in Wine - 60-90 in a Glass - Really?
By Jacie Heng
Yes, there are really calories in wine. In fact, there are calories in all the drinks and foods we consume. Without calories, one cannot survive. However, even though one must consume calories in order to survive, one should also take into consideration the amount of calories in wine, especially if you are trying to keep your body in shape or trying to lose some extra weight.
The Amount Of Calories In Wine
Typically, there are about 60 to 90 calories in an average glass of wine and approximately 300 to 500 calories in an average bottle of wine. This amount compared with the other foods we consume, e.g. a hamburger (contains up to 1,000 calories), is a minimal consideration.
There is not a lot of fat in wine, if any at all. What is present is sugar and a small amount of carbohydrates, which is a relatively small amount as compared to a slice of bread. Thus, wine can be considered as a good source of calories.
What Are The Benefits Of Drinking Wine?
In general, drinking wine:
- Helps to enhance the taste of the food we eat,
- Helps in our digestion, and
- Studies have also shown that red wines contain high concentrations of antioxidants. These antioxidants are known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties. In addition, antioxidants have also been found to increase HDL cholesterol (the good kind of cholesterol) and help prevent blood clots and plaque from forming on arteries as well.
In a nutshell, although there are calories in wine, there are still several benefits of drinking wine.
