Search no further for finely-crafted, small-production Champagne outside the mainstream. This creamy, biscuity, minerally-fresh and flinty wine owes its full body and depth of flavour to the use of 80% Pinot Noir in the final blend. A wine for food as well as an apéritif for the connoisseur: it makes a pleasing match for shellfish, [...]

When William Cossart arrived in Madeira in 1808 after a 6 year journey from Dublin (his boat was hijacked by the French), William Gordon, founder of the island's oldest shipper, had the prefix he'd been waiting for. Fugitive from Scotland's '45 Rebellion', Gordon was pleased that his wines were used to toast America's Declaration of [...]

Founded in 1972 by Fabio Ceschin (whose family have made wine since the 1920s) Il Colle lies amid the rolling hillsides of San Pietro di Feletto, to the north of Italy's Treviso region, which Italian wine aficionados will recognise as Prosecco country. This is a fine example of the style, fresh and dry, with crisp [...]

This outrageously good value fizz from the progressive 'Viñedos y Reserva' winery near Madrid, on the banks of the Ciguela River, has had Jancis Robinson raving. After 20 short years, 'V&R' are leading the field of sparkling wine producers on the plains of La Mancha (Europe's biggest designated wine region and home to Don Quixote). [...]

This wine really represents stunning value for money. Aged for 24 months in American oak and then 5 years in bottle makes for a multi dimensional wine, bursting with flavour. On the nose, fruits of the forest mingle with a touch of spicy vanilla. The fruit on the palate is mature yet fresh with vanilla, [...]

Pale, bright yellow in colour with aromas of soft citrus fruits, spices and vanilla oak. With a dominant flavour of white peach it is sweet and ripe but nicely high-pitched for a wine from this Premier Cru vineyard. Firmly structured, intense and persistent.

This year's vintage shows a greater concentration of flavour and substance than previous years. Dried tobacco leaf, cassis and plum notes soar from this deeply coloured red, born of rich ripe fruit in an excellent vintage. The palate is full and soft and very well formed tannins make for a tasty and elegant wine.

Making wines from grain and dried fruits is a boom to the townsman who finds these ingredients easily available. Mixtures of these ingredients really make strong, fully flavored, but not too fully flavored wines which, when not make too sweet, are often likened to whiskeys, brandies and other strong liqueurs.
