Based in ruggedly beautiful Samos since 1934, the island's co-operative winery takes its role as keeper of the 3,000 year-old local dessert wine-making tradition very seriously. Their vineyards, planted to the sensuously-scented Muscat grape, cloak the slopes of Mount Ampelos at breathtaking altitudes. Fortified to 15%, this lovely wine offers a rich, sweet mouthful of [...]

Natalino Gino's father went 'green' twice over. First the herbicides he'd been advised to spray on his vineyards (planted by patriarch Amadio Gino in 1925) to the west of the Veneto's Soave region made him unwell. As a result, in 1980 he set out to achieve organic certification, finally succeeding ten years later. Here, grapes [...]

There's nothing lean, mean or green about the Loire Cabernet Francs of Frédéric Mabileau. As wife Nathalie (mother of two dimpled boys) says "He knows how to make chubby babies. " Frédéric lovingly tends his Bourgeuil vineyards, ploughing between rows to aerate the soil, and pruning and training to expose bunches to maximum sunlight. His [...]

Jean-Paul Versino, who operates from his home on the south side of Châteauneuf, is emerging as a star of the region. His use of oak is idiosyncratic: he employs beermaking vats from Alsace, so well-used that there are scarcely any woody flavours left. This, however, his Grenache-rich top cuvée, was aged in small barrels for [...]

Wonderful purity of blackfruit flavours, reminiscent of Pauillac were it not for the added warmth.

We thought we'd 'Peaked' at our first vintage of these Clare Valley classics, but they keep on knocking our socks off. This Riesling is immensely appealing, with flavours of lime peel and citrus lending appetising dryness. Not to mention perfect with firm-fleshed fish. It's a neat touch that flame-tressed Jane Mitchell should have chosen vineyards [...]

Plumb in the middle of Victoria's historic Yarra Valley, Green Point earned its title because the property remained verdant longer than any other after the grass-searing onset of summer. Run by Moet & Chandon since 1986, the focus is, as you'd expect, on classic fizz. Their fastest-seller is this Chardonnay-Pinot Noir, a paradigm of New [...]

From one of Chile's top producers comes this is fruity expressive wine. Punchy flavours of raspberry and blackberry combine well with the a spicy edge which is typical of this grape variety. A small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend gives this wine good structure and balance.

This is a really interesting wine, in the good sense! With enticing, intense aromas of toasted brioche, almonds, apricots, baked apples and vanilla. The palate it opulent with a buttery, honeyed texture and vibrant flavours of tarte tatin, vanilla and butterscotch. It is rich and mellow with a very long, indulgent finish.

Pinotage is a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault, traditionally known as Hermitage, and has gained increasing popularity in South Africa. This is a textbook example of how good this grape variety can be. Full bodied with dark berry and plum flavours and new French oak which adds well balanced complexity.

Both the Cabernet and Merlot are clearly present in this wine. There are dark blackcurrant and black olive notes from the Cabernet with the plummy, brambly Merlot flavours softening the blend. The palate is tight and firm with tannins and oak working well to make this a powerful wine, perfect for hearty winter dishes.

Mercurey is a region that consistently produces good quality wines at great value in Burgundy. This example is wonderfully aromatic with plenty of black fruit, particularly cherry, and underlying sweet spice aromas. On the palate there is good concentration of flavours and crunchy, firm tannins. A good partner for your roast turkey.

Fruit for this wine was sourced from Saint Clair's own vineyard at Doctor's Creek, and blended with a small amount from the Southern Valleys to add complexity. Bright ruby red in colour, aromas of raspberry and plum are complemented by lifted floral notes and a touch of spice. A luscious and soft palate with flavours [...]
