Wine Notes: Margaret River Wines
Everybody knows that for the world’s best Cabernet Sauvignon, you need to look at the Bordeaux region of France, but that might be changing soon. You see, there’s an overlooked region of Australia, about four hours south of Perth, that’s drawing the attention of even the most dedicated Cabernet lovers. Western Australia’s Margaret River wine region gets passed over too often, but it features some truly amazing wines.
The region is a great choice for anyone coming to Western Australia, with lots of opportunities to explore the area, plenty of fun water activities, and some excellent wine tasting opportunities. After all twenty percent of Australia’s fine wine exports from from the Margaret River region.
Part of the reason for the great wine growing conditions is the climate. Western Australia is warm and has a wonderful maritime climate that provides a great place to grow wine grapes. Add in wide beaches, warm waters, and excellent surfing conditions, and you’ll see why travelers should take the time to check this area out.
There are more activities to enjoy, as well. For instance, you’ll find that the Leeuwin estate has been offering annual concerts since 1985, featuring the best in music from classical orchestral performances to more contemporary country and blues. It’s something you won’t want to miss if you visit at the right time of year.
Majestic lodges and luxuriously decorated private cabins are available, as are bed and breakfasts and conventional hotels. Whether your idea of a good time is a comfortable hotel room close to everything or a glass of fine local Chardonnay on your private balcony hidden in the trees, you’ll be able to find the right place to stay. Once you have lodging, it’s time to check out the wines!
Once you know where you’ll be staying, you’ll want to investigate the wines, and there are many opportunities to do so. Local vineyards offer tours that show you how the wine is really produced, and give you the opportunity to try some great wines. You can also enjoy cellar door tastings that will offer some excellent variety.
If you love wine, you won’t be disappointed in wines from the Margaret River area. While Cabernet Sauvignon can be overly tannic or dry, you’ll find that most examples are deep and soft, without any unpleasant overtones. The Cabernets are equally good. You’ll want to try them all, and maybe even take a few bottles home with you!
If you’ve never taken the time to visit the Margaret River wine region or try any of the great wines produced there, you’re missing something special. This region has so much to offer, from beautiful scenery to the best wines in Australia. When you plan your next vacation, don’t overlook this treasure.
